About Session

Adapting Student-Centered Pedagogy Across Three Distinct Musical Genres

The concept of student-centered teaching is not difficult to grasp. And yet, much of vocal training has evolved from the master-apprentice model, which has—for centuries—promoted and institutionalized a binary, hierarchical methodology to teaching and learning. This approach prioritizes the teacher’s perceptions, silencing students’ artistic and technical instincts.
When faced with what educator Joseph McDonald calls “a wild triangle of relations” between teacher, students, and subject,” how can voice teachers transition to a student-centered pedagogy?

In this workshop, participants will examine the contrasts between teacher-centered and student-centered approaches as they relate to vocal conditioning, repertoire selection, and coaching. Reflective prompts will help teachers explore their own studio practices and consider how to adopt a more flexible, individualized teaching philosophy.

Though the philosophy remains consistent, its application can vary by genre. Presenters Dr. Marisa Lee Naismith (CCM), Travis Sherwood (Western classical), and David Sisco (musical theatre) will share their expertise to demonstrate how student-centered strategies function across musical styles.

Student-centered teaching encourages teachers to move from “master” to mentor and co-learner. By listening empathetically and supporting student agency, teachers can inspire independent artistry and rediscover joy in their own work.
