About Session

Navigating Conflict in the Voice Studio

While conflict is an inevitable component of human interaction, it can become particularly damaging within the vulnerable space of one-on-one voice instruction. Navigating interpersonal challenges in the studio is therefore a critical—yet often overlooked—part of our work as voice teachers. Facilitated by David Sisco (NYU Steinhardt), this lecture explores practical, research-informed strategies for addressing and resolving student-teacher conflict through a lens of empathy, equity, and shared responsibility.

Drawing from attachment theory, motivational interviewing, and trauma-informed pedagogy, this session will present proactive and reconciliatory approaches to managing conflict, with special attention to the role of power dynamics and cultural humility. Attendees will consider how to establish flexible, respectful boundaries while maintaining pedagogical rigor, and how to approach challenging conversations around diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

Several case studies will be explored in group discussion, and participants will leave with a curated reading list and practical tools to integrate into their studio teaching. Supporting a holistic and collaborative approach to pedagogy, this session aims to strengthen the psychological contract between student and teacher—fostering trust, improving communication, and ultimately supporting deeper learning and wellbeing.
