About Session
Expanding professionalism of voice teachers
This presentation examines the expanding professionalism of voice teachers necessitated by societal changes and the uncertainties of the future. As in other professional fields, this expansion entails not only the development of essential skills for professional survival but also the adoption of broader societal responsibilities, new potentials, and even forms of activism. Drawing on recent discussions of artistic citizenship, the presentation considers voice teachers’ roles both as creative agents within societies and ambassadors of healthy singer identities. Acknowledging the paradox of inclusivity in singing, the presentation further explores how access and inclusivity can be strengthened in voice teaching practices. Illustrative examples are drawn from recent studies on the professionalism of popular music voice teachers and on related tertiary voice teacher education in Finland and Sweden.
