About Session
Singing teaching today opens up to new experiences given by scientific studies and the observation of the human being in his physical, mental and psychic integrity. A multifaceted training horizon opens up for the singing teacher: artistic experience, indepth knowledge of physiology, knowledge of the most cuttingedge teaching methods, ongoing training in the light of artistic phoniatrics, knowledge and continuous study of the repertoire, without underestimating the subtle magic given by the sensitivity in relating to the student’s problems, to his physicality, to his nervous response to physical and artistic requests and last but not least to his experience as a person who brings with him the joys, pains, emotions and experiences that make every man its own uniqueness. But why not also interact in a dynamism between styles? The lecture that we want to propose is the result of the openness to the new, an objective comparison on the physiological level of two singing styles that can provide each other with new insights to help the student on the path of proprioception towards authentic bodily intelligence. The comparison between opera and jazz singing is an interesting starting point to lead the participant to the internship through a journey that explores the cavities of resonance, the all-round athletic and stylistic attitudes. CONTENTS – Brief mention of the birth of the two styles. – The breathing bellows and its athleticisms. – The laryngeal attitude – The Vocal Tract. – The vocal focus. – Stylistic characteristics compared. – Stylistic peculiarities. The topics will be discussed first in a theoretical way with short examples from the speakers that will leave space for the partecipants bodily experiences in both styles, which allow them to better perceive on their own bodies the differences or connections between one style and the other. This workshop was born from in-depth research that we collected in a book published entitled “The secrets of the voice: Jazz and Opera singing in comparison”
