SingLates: “Voice in Motion — Redefining Vocal Training Through Pilates, Vocal Exercises, and Breath”
About the SingLates Method SingLates was developed in response to a growing need in voice education for a more integrated approach that connects functional movement, core stability, and voice production. SingLates is a transformative practice that integrates Pilates, vocal training, and breathwork for optimal body and voice connection. The method was developed by Jenny Liebkind and Anna Hakala—two passionate experts in their fields. Drawing on years of cross-disciplinary experience in vocal pedagogy, somatic practices, and Pilates, we created SingLates as a voice-first movement system—transforming classical Pilates to support vocalization, breath management, posture, and resonance.
This innovative method, developed in Finland, blends modified Pilates movements with vocal exercises, all grounded in conscious breathing. While traditional Pilates focuses on physical alignment and core strength, SingLates goes beyond by placing the voice at the center of each session, integrating breathing techniques that help balance the mind and body. In SingLates, we approach movement with the voice in mind—ensuring proper voice awareness and body alignment.
One of the key principles of SingLates is the concept of breath reprogramming. In SingLates, we focus on nasal breathing and work on balancing the ratio of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the body through specific carbon dioxide exercises. These exercises, typically done before vocal work, activate the lungs and help balance the nervous system, creating a relaxed state ready for the vocal and physical challenges ahead. By combining movement with mindful breath and sound, SingLates offers an integrated approach to well-being that promotes relaxation, strength, and vocal freedom. Core Components: • Postural Alignment & Vocal Support Pilates-inspired movements designed to free the thoracic and pelvic regions, supporting optimal vocal tract shaping. • Breathwork for Singers Conscious breathing techniques that build awareness of inhalation, breath control and vocal onset. • Singing in Motion Training the voice while the body moves in a gentle, coordinated way to support proprioception, nervous system regulation, and vocal consistency.
