About Session

VOICE as BODY and BODY as VOICE. Marta Raviglia proposes an innovative and holistic approach to the study and practice of improvisation through the synergy of singing and movement. This is a practical workshop, not a lecture, that centers on the idea that the voice is inseparable from the body that produces it. Participants will explore key elements of vocal technique and musical composition, focusing on enhancing the ability to listen and a strong sense of rhythm through a series of interactive exercises. Inspired by her research into the relationship between voice, movement, and improvisation, Raviglia will demonstrate how a massive use of the body during vocal warm-ups can positively affect the conscious use of the voice as a pure instrument. This research will lead to a publication for a prestigious Italian musical publisher. Participants will explore a diverse repertoire, including free and guided improvisation, as well as compositions from the African-American tradition to classical contemporary works. The group dynamic is a central element, fostering a deep relationship among participants that builds trust and enhances communication. The workshop’s methodology emphasizes that respecting the uniqueness of each body is fundamental. By vocalizing in movement and improvising with various musical forms, students will develop their sensibility, creativity, and listening skills. The approach blurs the line between practice and performance, as students learn to be fully present and effective with their instrument, becoming aware of their full technical and interpretive potential. – CV – Marta Raviglia, a singer and researcher, specializes in the relationship between voice, movement, and improvisation.
