About Session

We immerse ourselves in the world of yodeling and learn about the head voice and chest voice. Both are essential for the yodeling technique of switching between the two, known as the larynx beat. In addition to technical knowledge, we learn about the diversity of yodeling, encounter expressions such as “johle”, “jutze” and “zaure” and learn how they sound and how incredibly good it feels when you do it yourself.

In December 2025, yodeling was inscribed on UNESCO’s *Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity*, marking a significant milestone for Swiss and Alpine vocal traditions. This paper explores the ethnomusicological and cultural heritage dimensions of yodeling, a vocal technique characterized by rapid alternation between chest and head registers and the use of non-semantic syllables often linked to regional dialects. Two principal forms—*Naturjodel* and *Jodellied*—illustrate its diversity, with performance contexts ranging from solo and ensemble singing to choral arrangements, frequently accompanied by instruments and regional attire. Beyond its institutional presence in the Swiss Yodeling Association (over 12,000 members in 711 groups), yodeling thrives in informal networks and inspires contemporary artistic practices, underscoring its adaptability and cultural resilience. The presentation will address the implications of UNESCO’s recognition for safeguarding policies and identity negotiation, situating yodeling within broader debates on intangible heritage and living traditions5
