Masterclass (classical repertoire)
Extensive work on vocal technique, musical style, expression, interpretation, and performance. The aim is free sound, a personal musical design,and a convincing stage presence.
Born in Esslingen, in Southern Germany, Ulrike Sonntag studied voice in Berlin. She won several scholarships and was awarded first prizes.
She made her opera debut at the Hamburg State Opera. After permanent engagements at the opera houses of Heidelberg and Mannheim she joined the Stuttgart State Theatre. From 1991 to 1994 she was a member of the Vienna State Opera.
She has made guest appearances at the opera houses of Berlin, Frankfurt, Cairo, Monte Carlo, Tel Aviv, Trieste, and Cagliari and at the Festival of Ludwigsburg.
In addition she has been a very active concert singer, as proved by numerous radio, TV and disc recordings. She sang at famous festivals such as Salzburg, Vienna, Frankfurt, Berlin or Montreux. Her repertoire covers a wide range of music, from baroque to contemporary, and she has worked with many distinguished orchestras and conductors. Concert tours led her all over Europe, but also to Russia, USA, Israel, China, Japan, Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina.
Lieder singing also plays an important part in Ulrike Sonntag’s work: she presented recitals all over Germany, at the festivals of Ludwigsburg, Rheingau, Bad Urach, Weilburg, Heidelberg, Munich, Lisbon, Paris, Lyon and Vladivostok. She performed the “Marienleben” by Hindemith in Berlin, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Salzburg, Milano and Madrid, and produced CD recordings with Mignon-compositions by Schubert, Schumann and Wolf, as well as two CDs with songs and chamber music by Milhaud.
Over the last years she has earned an international reputation as experienced trainer for voice and interpretation at master classes in South America, Russia, Bulgaria, Paris, Bucharest, Budapest, Riga and 2014 in Montepulciano/Italy.
Since 2005 she has held a professorship at the voice department of the University of Music Stuttgart.
